Indecisiveness

Now that I'm sort of out of my funk (and heading to Austin next week!) I am back to thinking maybe I do want to do Wildflower. As in, I want to RACE but I don't want to deal with the camping shit all by myself on top of getting ready for a race. Last year Jocelyn and I (with Tereza) drove down together and her mom packed us a crap-ton of food and we were able to set up the tent together, etc etc. This year I'm my own and I don't own a tent (though I could borrow) or a cooler or anything necessary for camping.

Compromise: find a hotel in King City. According to Google Maps King City is about 40 minutes from the campgrounds at Lake San Antonio. It's a 4-5 hour drive to King City from Folsom. I still won't have anyone to drive down with, and since there is no cell service at the campgrounds I doubt I will be able to find anyone I know, BUT I could work it such that:

  • Drive down Thursday night to hotel in King City
  • Go into race site on Friday and get race packet/check out expo. Head back into King City for dinner and chilling in my hotel.
  • Get up early on Saturday and drive into race site for the race. Also check out of hotel. Race and maybe hang out afterwards depending how well I do and what my mood is like.
  • Drive back north Saturday night, maybe stop in Berkeley and hang out with Shang on Sunday.

The hotel cost is about the same as the online price for a camping pass Thursday-Sunday. In my current plan I only have to take off Friday from work, and I hope to have Internet access at the hotel meaning I can still check email. In theory, it looks like other races I've done. When I did the Mattoon Man Half-Ironman in Mattoon, IL, which was about 1 hour south of campus, I would get up at 3:30am and drive to the race which started at 6:30am. At least Wildflower doesn't start until 8am so I can probably get away with not getting up until 4-4:30am on race day.

So, The Readers That Be (similar to TPTB), should I race or not? I tentatively booked a hotel but can cancel! I have paid the entry fee already which was something like $200-210.

Shang is cool.

If logistical factors aren't a _huge_ deal and it's just motivation and you wanna do it then sure?

But it's up to you / other readers :D

I'd say, you are healthy and reasonably trained for it. It was the race you wanted to do and it suits the type of triathlete you are (the course, not the camping). Do it!! One last shot, unless you can think of something better to do that weekend.

If I were in your shoes I'd do it. I'd camp too. Lots of good energy around before the event..and even if you come alone, I'm sure you could quickly make friends. That being said, I also remember not getting a good night's sleep, and being super cold in the morning...two good arguments for the hotel idea.

If you decide not to, you can come to Berkeley and do the Urban Assault ride with me!

Do it. Because I already feel bad about not making it.

Sounds like you have pretty well worked out all the details, so why not give it a shot? It might be a terrific experience...
