So I have an inflamed (or thereabouts) patellar tendon right now. It's the thing that connects your kneecap to the shin bone and was most likely aggravated by all the downhill pavement running at Blood, Sweat, and Beers two weeks ago. So all I got for my distressed knee is a pint glass... right, even trade.
I'm having flashbacks to 2 summers ago when I initially fell on my knee. I think the resulting raised kneecap from that injury is also a partial contribution to my current injury. I believe it's like the same kind of pain I had back then, so I went back through this blog to see what I wrote 2 years ago. It's a good thing I have this, since otherwise I wouldn't have a good recollection of what happened back then. But now I can sort of remember. However though, I do sound rather stupid and dramatic back then. But that was then, this is now.
I've been relatively resting my knee, only biking/running every other day, swimming the opposite. I got a knee strap thing that seemed to help a bit on Wednesday's brick, if even just for the placebo effect. I think though my leg is actually a tad small for the "adjustable, fits all" band since I don't think it's as tight as it is supposed to be. And after the brick my knee didn't hurt. Strangely though, my knee didn't hurt during the actual swim, but was stiff and achy after.
So far I have been taking ibuprofen, icing, heating, using the knee strap, taking fish oil pills (anti-inflammatory), restarted taking glucosamine chondroitin + MSM, increased dosage of OptygenHP, cut out grains completely in the past week and most sugar (both are inflammatory foods), eaten fish at lunch, and normal diet of pineapple, berries, turmeric, etc. I feel like a walking supplement factory. I have been rolling and stretching, and saw the ART doc on Monday.
Today, I got some kinesio tape from my new sponsor, SpiderTech! So hopefully will get an appointment with the doctor in the next couple days to get taped up. Any other suggestions? I've run out of ideas.

hi, lurker here. i've been rehabbing a knee injury and knee surgery for 18 months and i've been consistently told to avoid heat. Stretching is a good idea as well- I have a bit of tendonitis in my quad tendon (top of the kneecap) as a side effect of rehab and it is much worse if my legs are tight. Also, depending on your knee injury, kicking while swimming can put a lot of pressure on the patella. So maybe try swimming w/o kicking and seeing if it makes a difference. And avoid pushing off the wall of the pool wth the bad leg. I still barely kick while swimming (just as I rotate my hips) and I swam with a pull buoy for months after my injury. anyhow, some stuff to try and ask doc/pt about. good luck sorting it out. being injured sucks.
